Exhaust manifold gasket is a multi-use gasket assembly that is used to plug the leaks in the manifold sealing surfaces. New engines are often not equipped with them because the castings are brand new and the machined surfaces are also faultless. After prolonged use these exhaust gaskets become a necessity. Good quality has fiber material on one side and perforated steel on the other. Steel face is placed towards the manifold and the fiber surface touches the head. This provides a seal and also allows the exhaust manifold to move on the metal surface of the gasket. These are of many types and are made of a variety of material combinations.
